I am young, right? I look at some of my friends from high school on Facebook and think, "Do I look that old?" In March I will turn 35. I believe that being young is a state of mind, a state of health, a state of being. I think young (I'm very immature), I try to take care of myself (sharing a half gallon of ice cream at 10pm is care), and I'm completely in a state of denial, so that means I'm young, right? A few weeks ago while watching TV I heard a doctor say that you need to start mammograms at 35. What?! Now I know this is true, it's just the fact that mammograms are for old ladies. I know that because when I was a kid, let's say Katie McCaul's age, I remember thinking how old 35 was and of course you would need mammograms by then. On the eve of this now momentous year for me I am telling you I am not ready to smash my boobies. I don't want to do it. I can't possibly be old enough to have to do this. Then on Monday I was feeling really weird. I would for no reason suddenly be burning hot and sweaty, then just as suddenly be chilled. Kenneth asked me if I had a fever. No, I otherwise felt fine, just weirdly hot/cold. Near the end of the day I finally realized what was going on. I was experiencing my first hot flashes. What the?!?! I'm not afraid of getting old. It's cool. I want my senior discounts. I want my grandkids. I want my Winebego. I know that what I am experiencing with the flashes is just something that happens to some people and I'm one of the lucky ones. I know that they won't be constant, just a fun surprise every once in a while as they build in frequency. I know it's my hormones, and I have some crazy ones. I know that you will all still love me even with smashed ta-tas and me sweating in 32 degree weather. Right? Right?! Oh well, here's to moving into my dotage. Won't you join me?

Into My Dotage

I have an lab order for my first mamogram in the car right now...I am avoiding it because I am way too young to have my first too!
Ha ha! Great post. Love the term "dotage." If it makes you feel any better, I found my first gray hair yesterday and started to feel my mortality too. Luckily I still have four years left until I'm old enough to start having to worry about ta-ta-smashing, as you so cleverly put it. :)
I love that you can make something not so fun into a funny post. :-)
yikes! You're scary me! I had no idea we had to start mammograms at 35. I must really be in denial. And I am so not looking forward to the hot flashes and hormonal craziness - I'm crazy enough as it is. But at least we'll all be going through it together, right? And yes, we'll still love you. And you really do look young, lucky duck. :)
Oh Jen, you are the bomb. What's up with leaving town and not telling me? Repeat this mantra--"30 is the new 20." So you are still young. Way to young for grandkids and Winnebagos, but never to young for mammos. Oh, should I tell you that the colonoscopies start at 40?
You are one "hot"..cougar ;)
I thought we had till 40 till mammograms and 50 for colonoscopies! Man, I'm in denial! Well, thanks for blazing the trail for us... I'm right behind you!
As your elder sister I can truly say that you are not old. You will never be old. You are just too cool to get old. The years may add up, but you will always be young. I didn't know I should have had a mamogram by now. I thought it was 40. I thought I had another year.
I'm having issues with "old" too. My problem is wrinkles. But, mammograms suck. My boobs are so flap-jacky, it would be pretty obvious if I had a lump. Maybe when I'm 35 I'll go in, they'll feel sorry for me and write me a note saying I don't have to come back for 10 more years...
You should organize a mammogram party... I read about it in a magazine, apparently it's the in thing to do, a bunch of gals schedule their appointments together, cheer for each other from the waiting room, and do lunch afterwards. You could call it the "Boobie Bashing Bash!" :)
I'm right behind you, girl! But so far, no hot flashes. Wait... what was that the other day? Holy *@^^%%!
That is why you are so young, because it is a state of mind. And you do look rather young as well.
Finding gray hairs, seeing a few wrinkles, even with it all, it hasn't hit me yet either.
I thought I had a mammogram the other day when I was laying on my bed and one of the kids pounced next to me to come and cuddle. Oweeee! So THAT's what it is like?
SO funny!
bonitinha, that is exactly my plan. I asked my sisters as they are all older than I, but only one said she would go with me. It should be a party.
Go smash your boobs! So, not a big deal. my mom is 56 and I have this conversation with her every time I see her. She thinks she is not old enough for one! Crazy lady! You should go with some friends and make it a party! :) haha
