If God had really intended men to fly,

he'd make it easier to get to the airport. ~George Winters

I just thought that was a funny quote on flying. The drive to the airport today to deliver my son to the silver winged beast wasn't bad at all. Actually the beast wasn't silver it was blue and red and orange, it's Southwest.

When my children turn 8 they are given the opportunity to fly to Oregon to spend time with Kenneth's family. This year was Theron's turn. They spend a week in Whistler, B. C. (that's Canada) at a timeshare his parents have. Then they spend a little more time in Oregon at the Rawling's home. They are spoiled rotten and tended to meticulously. I so appreciate my mother-in-law for being willing to do this. It's such an adventure for the kids and they get that special time with their grandparents. The first time with Ian was the hardest. I always feel a little anxious when they walk on the plane and I miss them while they are away. I try to be the mom I am on the playground. When I see them climbing the rock wall before I think they are ready and I want to grab them and keep them safe. Instead I watch them and stay on guard to fly to their aid should they need me.

When they reach the top they are so proud of themselves and I am so proud of them. I am also proud of myself for not rescuing them when it was not called for. I see them growing up and taking steps without me. They do such a great job on the plane and with their grandparents. They are not afraid at all. It's all excitement.

I always wish they would show a little sorrow at leaving my side, but they can barely spare the time to hug me and kiss me goodbye as they are moving towards the plane. I know he'll have a great time and I know he will be creating memories to last his whole life.

“There are two lasting bequests we can give our children: One is roots, the other is wings.” Hodding Carter

I've always loved that "roots and wings" quote but it's hard for me as a mom to get behind that wings part. *sniff sniff*

I dont know if I could let mine go! I'm sure it would get easier as they all end up going. Tyson leaves in Oct. to D.C. and I am worried! It is all about makiing memories, right? :)

I love this rite of passage for your kids. It's such a wonderful opportunity. Love this post. It's gotta be hard to let them go but it's wonderful to know that they'll be having such rich experiences and in such good hands.
