The Running, Skipping, Galloping, Dieing Girl

I have started running a few times a week since July. It kills me. My knees are greatly pained every time I do it, but I just ice them and do it again. I like the way I feel when I'm done, the sense of accomplishment and strength. I think I'm crazy the whole time I'm doing it though. Well, last week I read this article by this trainer. I originally saw her on Oprah with Gwyneth Paltrow last week. She said to get 30 min of music and run for one song, skip for one song and gallop for one song and then repeat until 30 min. I was actually excited to skip and gallop as running has been so hard. Well, if you want to feel that running is a breeze try to skip and gallop for extended periods of time. I did it this morning for the first time. I was a little concerned about the audience for my skipping and galloping so I went out pretty early. I wondered why I would care what people thought. Is is because you can't skip and gallop as an adult outside of an aerobics class? My caring about what other people thought lasted exactly 30 seconds into my first skipping song. Skipping is hard!! You think it's going to be lovely and feel like you are flying - WRONG! Then the galloping. I must admit I slowed the gallop down because I was dieing. Also, my shoes and socks must not have been made for skipping and galloping because pretty soon the pads of my feet felt like I was running on hot asphalt. After the skipping and galloping songs I couldn't wait to get to the running song. What is with the guitar solo, move on! Do we really need to hear another chorus, is that necessary? My knees felt fine afterwards, no ice. So if you want a good skipping/galloping/running show you can come watch me on Thursday sometime between 6 & 7 am. If you want a good skipping/galloping/running workout you can come join me on Thursday between 6 & 7. I don't do it for an hour I just do it sometime in that hour. Tell me what you do for exercise or what you enjoy doing and would do more if you had the opportunity.

LOL!! That's hilarious. And i would have LOVED to see you doing all that :P I guess it's people like me that makes you go early :P just kidding. I wouldn't have made fun of you, but I prolly would have had a good laugh. Anyway, you couldn't pay me enough $ to go out and exercise. I am not a running-type of gal. I probably should though. Oh well. I'm glad your knees don't hurt today!

I would love to run again someday. But I get shin-splints if I do too much too fast (which would be anything more than walking right now), so I'm afraid I won't be joining you.
I do try to go walk almost everyday(around 9:30 or 10 am). And I'd love a walking partner! anyone??

The skipping and galloping does sound like quite the entertainment for viewers - and hard work!!

I tried doing lunges along my walks (a long time ago) and felt pretty silly doing it. :)

You're awesome and I'm so jealous you have the guts to do that!

That is awesome! My knees hurt too everytime I go running but I keep doing it so maybe I will have to try the skipping thing.

I would have paid money to see that! I alternate between running, biking, and walking in the summer and depending on the day and my mood/how tired I am. I am pretty faithful about 4 days a week and I usually go between 2 and 4 miles at a time. I LOVE to be outside. I have been doing about an hour since the weather has been so nice, and if I walk I always do some good hills. In the winter, I need to get back to strength training, but I hate to be indoors when it's so nice out. The best thing ever invented is the ipod shuffle.

I hate running, but it almost sounded doable when alternated with skipping and galloping... that's like 2/3 fun 1/3 torture. Then I read the description of how the skipping and galloping felt and it all sounds terrible. :) I like to walk. Actually I love to walk and I try to do it every day with this gorgeous weather we've got going on. The prob of course is the kiddos. If I can get Quay to ride her bike the experience ends up feeling like exercise to me. If she's hoofing it, I might just as well be sitting on the couch. I own a pretty extensive collection of workout videos and dvds which I think about doing frequently and never actually do. I really like my pilates dvd, but I'm so out of shape now I can't get through it (pathetic!) and the kids whine SOOOOO much when I try to use the tv for my own purposes ("No Mom! Imagination Movers NOW!") so that just doesn't happen. My tap dance class is a real workout too. So once a week I break a sweat. That's not so bad, right?

Tell me when you run, skip, gallop by my house I will cheer you on. Have you tried to walk backwards either uphill or not? It kills, and mixes up the freak factor.

that actually sounds fun! It's amazing it hurts so bad considering we all skipped and galloped around the playground everyday for all of our childhood. I'd do it if my arthritis in my knees wasn't so bad. I'm terrified of blowing them out and needing replacements. It'd probably happen during galloping and wow that would be embarrassing to tell the surgeon. I'm sticking to walking and wii fit. Gotta love the games.

hahaha!! That would be fun to watch!! Recommendation about the knee thing...take Glucosamine, really. When I was training for a 1/2 marathon my knees would kill when I was done, but as soon as I started taking 2 pills a day, gone, nothing - it was great!!
